Our first stop in Da Nang was the famous Pink Cathedral, also known as the Chicken Church because the the chicken symbol on top of the lighting rod. It was built in 1924 during the French rule.
The next stop just a few minutes up the road was Han Market, the main market in Da Nang. It’s open daily from 6am-7pm and sells food, clothing, fabrics and houseware products.
After a very hot 30 minutes walk we arrived at the Da Nang Fine Art Museum. It contains over 1,000 pieces of art across 3 floors and was only 20,000 VND (56p) to get in!
Just nearby we found a cafe called Annap down a random alleyway. We both had smoothies and they were unreal. The entrance into the cafe was also extremely calming…
We went to visit Da Nang Downtown theme park which is soon to close down so it’s free entry and you can just pick your rides to go on. After seeing some of the roller coasters and the rust we decided against going on any but fun to watch the locals!
The next day we went to Ba Na Hills. It’s about 30 minutes outside of Da Nang and was a popular tourist spot for the French when founded in 1919 as a mountain top resort. In 2009 it was opened by Sunworld as a theme park.
The cable car to get up to the theme park holds the Guinness World Record for the longest single-wire cable car route at 5,771 meters and the greatest height difference between stations at 1,368 meters!
It’s hard to explain how big the park is but it’s like its own city just plonked on the top of a mountain. Lots of rides, many different restaurants, huge castles and even a whole replica of a French town (minus the graffiti).
Somehow we turned up during a beer festival so we got two free beers each just for entering and then multiple free beers throughout the day and the best part is that you get to drink them in Sunworld’s own brewery which is also the highest in Vietnam at 1,407 meters above sea level!
Underneath the town, actually in the mountain is three whole floors of rides and arcade games, just make sure you don’t go on ‘Journey to the centre of the earth’ it’s dreadful!!
The most famous attraction since 2018 is The Golden Bridge, which is an Instagrammer’s heaven… we waited until later on in the day so it wasn’t as busy! It has two giant hands that look like they’re holding up the bridge.
After nearly getting trapped up on the mountains as we couldn’t find a cable car back open we finally started our descent in the pitch black… spooky!
The next day we went to the world famous My Khe beach which is consistently ranked among one of the best beaches in the world and compared regularly to Miami Beach in the US.
We decided to come back the next morning at 5am to try and catch the sunrise however forgot that a huge storm was coming in later that day…
Every weekend at 9pm on the famous Dragon Bridge that goes across the River Han, people gather to watch the dragon breathe fire and ‘spray’ water. The fire was what we expected but the water was more of a deluge!
For dinner a few nights we found the best Burrito we’ve ever had from a small restaurant called Viet Burrito. It was so good we even got it delivered to our hotel one evening!
After a short 30 minutes bus ride from Da Nang we arrived at our next stop, Hoi An. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique architecture blending Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and European styles.
We’re here for three more days before heading to Nha Trang.
