On Monday we were walking through Chinatown and suddenly started hearing some loud fire crackers going off. We found out it is a tradition to scare away evil spirits and invite good fortune.
Just a short walk around the corner we went right below Merdeka 118 as we wanted to see how tall it looked from directly below and also to see the new shopping mall under construction which will open later this year.

For many of our meals in KL we’ve been going to a restaurant called Hai Kee Fried Beef Bun. They are famous for their freshly made beef buns but they also do many different noodle soups and rice dishes.

The next day after 8 months of being in Asia, Tasha finally tried the infamous fruit, Durian. In Asia it is known as the king of fruits, famous for its potent and divisive aroma and unique, creamy flesh. In most hotels and public transport it’s banned due to the extreme smell. She’s glad she tried it but won’t be going back for seconds anytime soon…

Just around the corner from this stall was Kwai Chai Hong, a restored heritage alleyway which is famous for its vibrant street art that depicts life in the 1960’s.

In the afternoon we headed to a Rituals store as Tasha had seen they were doing a festive giveaway. All you had to do was pick three keys and see if any of them unlocked the draw to win a prize…

On New Year’s Eve morning we went to Suria KLCC, the shopping mall in the Petronas Towers. On Level 3 there is a free to enter art gallery called Galeri Petronas.

It had artwork from local artists in Malaysia but also pieces from around the world. There was also music playing, selected to enhance the experience.

Afterwards we went to see another movie at the cinema just released called The Housemaid. I’ve read the books so knew it would be Tasha’s kind of film!

In the evening we jumped on the extremely busy metro to KLCC park to watch the New Year Fireworks. They had a stage set up and a music concert in the park. We had a stroll round the park to find the best place to watch the countdown from…

And then after a light show on the towers the countdown to 2026 begun…
After nearly 3 weeks in Kuala Lumpur it was time to leave today. We checked out and got the metro to TBS bus station on the outskirts of the city. Then we had a two hour bus journey down to our next destination, Malacca! We’re staying in a Japanese styled Airbnb and it’s lovely.

For dinner just down the road from us we of course found another noodle restaurant which makes all their noodles fresh in front of you. It was amazing and we’ll definitely be going back!

Malacca is the historical capital of Malaysia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site so lots to explore over the next 5 days!
