Riding a Coconut Boat in Hoi An

Another location and another market to explore. Hoi An has a large clothing market indoors and a food market along the road outside selling vegetables and meats.

In the old town of Hoi An there is so many shops to look at that are all decorated with lanterns and it’s extremely picturesque.

Lantern making shop, we decided against this as we don’t have space in our backpacks!

One of the main attractions to do in Hoi An is to go down the river on a coconut boat tour. You get 50 minutes so plenty of time to take in the amazing scenery.

Our lady coming to pick us up

The main thing to remember is suncream and water as it’s extremely hot out on the water. Luckily you get given an umbrella and traditional Vietnamese hats to block out the sun.

So many coconut trees!

You can pay extra to get spun extremely quickly in a slightly larger coconut but after watching someone else do it and get soaked we gave it a pass!

Not his first day on the job!

We also went to try out some crabbing on the edge of the river which was included on the tour. It wasn’t going too well until we caught a crab and it jumped into the boat! The crabs here had purple claws, definitely a new one for us!

Watch the fingers!

Every evening there was a night market only about 300 metres away from our homestay. It had a big selection of clothes and souvenirs as well as a few food stalls.

Night market

In the evenings it was nice to walk by the river as all the boats were lit up and lots of people releasing lanterns into the water. Just be prepared to turn down a tour every 30 seconds!

The traditional dish of Hoi An is Cau Lau which Tasha gave a go and was also only 35,000 VND (99p)! It has pork, greens and rice noddles with a slightly different texture because they soak the noddles in lye water. It was very nice!

Please Sir, can I have some more?

We then caught an overnight sleeper bus from Hoi An to Nha Trang that took 11 hours. Not a bad ride but extremely heavy rain so lots of flooded roads. We arrived at 5am, dropped our bags at our hotel and went and watched the sunrise at the beach…

The white paint on trees helps to stop pests apparently

We went and checked out Tram Huong Tower which is a mini museum of of the local area designed to promote tourism to the area.

Cool shape!

Today we went and checked out the Institute of Oceanography Museum. It has old preserved specimens, many different fish, a massive whale skeleton and even some saltwater crocodiles.

Tomorrow is a national holiday in Vietnam that marks the 80th anniversary of their independence. There are massive celebrations around the country and we saw them setting up a large stage here next to the beach.

Bring on the fireworks!
